Configuring In-Band Management for the APIC on Cisco ACI (Part #2-via a L2Out) Posted on 2016/12/23 by RedNectar Chris Welsh Note: This is the second in a series of articles – the following is a variation of the first in the series.

Jun 16, 2020 · The management IP addresses used to access the CIMC on a server can be out-of-band (OOB) addresses, through which traffic traverses the fabric interconnect via the management port, or inband addresses, through which traffic traverses the fabric interconnect via the fabric uplink port. In-band is managing locally through the network itself, using a telnet connection to a router or by using SNMP-based tools (such as HP’s Open View). In-band is the most common way to manage a network. However, for large or business-critical networks, in-band network management alone is not enough. In-band signaling is insecure because it exposes control signals, protocols and management systems to end users, which may result in falsing. In the 1960s and 1970s, so-called phone phreaks used blue boxes for deliberate falsing, in which the appropriate tones for routing were intentionally generated, enabling the caller to abuse functions Nov 19, 2019 · Out of Band Management is a core capability that every data center and remote site should have to improve overall uptime and remote access to allow for quick response times to remediation efforts and network repairs to reduce and even mitigate outages. However, not every IT asset needs to have OOB management. Out-of-Band Management products enable technicians to perform maintenance operations without the security risks of In-Band Management, while always having the guaranteed access of Out Of Band Management. Using Out-of-Band Management means it is even possible to reach the network or network device when they are out of commission. The in-band management proxy agent is a package that is added to a host (or group of hosts) with in-band connectivity via Fibre Channel to the storage array. An external management station can then talk to this proxy host via an out-of-band connection and the management commands are then relayed to the storage device via the in-band path.

Both in-band and out-of-band (OOB) management are usually done through a network connection, but an out-of-band management card can use a physically separated network connector if preferred. A remote management card usually has at least a partially independent power supply and can switch the main machine on and off through the network.

This management method involves an alternate and dedicated connection to the system separate from the actual network that the system runs on. This allows an administrator to ensure the establishment of trust boundaries since there would only be a single entry point for the management interface. This post shows how to enable inband management on Mellanox Ethernet switches. Inband Management is the ability to manage the switch via the 40/56 GbE interface, and in various environments, inband management may be an alternative way to manage the switch.

A QFX5100 and an EX4200. QFX5100(QSFP+ breakout)---->(SFP+)EX4200. The interfaces connecting are trunked. Im pretty new to junos, but in the Cisco world I could just assign an IP to the l3 interface super easy and get in-band management.
